1. And, Go!

Recently Alexis took on a writing challenge: 50 posts in 50 days, at 200 words per post. Unexpectedly, I love reading this experiment from him. He distills well, I think.

Rather than give you another list of things I’m thinking about, as I am wont to do when my personal life eats me like an enormous whale, I think I’ll try this challenge.

I’m committed to about 25,000 words in the next three weeks, for work. These words demand weight and structure. They need to be edited with a fine toothed comb. Gah.

In a psuedo-past life, I made corsets. I put this in the past tense because I didn’t bring my sewing machine to Australia. But I miss corsets, not only making them, but having the confidence and occasion to wear them. I designed my own patterns, as well.

I brought one bolt of corset fabric with me when I came here. I couldn’t bear to leave it. It’s navy velvet with gold overlay, and it makes my fingers ache to think what a beautiful corset it could be. Soon it might hurt hard enough to make me sew by hand.

Not that I need another project. Right.

Do you *need* the sewing machine to do the corset-making? I mean, I know it’s a damn sight faster. I’m just curious because a while back, my sewing machine broke. I couldn’t afford a new one, nor did I get around to taking it to be fixed, but I’d just got material & pattern for a dress. So I did it by hand instead (French seams & all). It took longer in terms of hours (obviously), but shorter in terms of time-to-completion; because hand sewing is something that you can do in company, and without needing to get things out. Whereas machine sewing is something that you (well, I) need to set time aside for, and that just never happened.

I have the vague intention of making a corset someday. Although at the moment I have half a patchwork skirt cut out and should finish that; and sewing has taken a back seat to knitting again anyway. They oscillate.

    Juliet,
Technically I don’t *need* a sewing machine to do a corset, but they are a serious pain without one. Unfortunately I’m not really doing the kind of social activity that lets me sew in the meantime right now. I actually think dresses are much easier, because they don’t have boning channels.

I don’t have to set aside too much time to make a corset on a machine, actually. It’s usually a couple of evenings to do one. Not so bad. I recommend making one some time, if you have the time and the patience. They can be very rewarding in the long run, and unlike simple dresses, they last through a lot of wear if they’re made well.
